It sounds like you are looking for sync software, and I do not have a good solution for you - I don't think it exists in Mac OS itself. If not, then best practice would actually be to back up the entire Mac with Time Machine so user preferences, applications, and system files can be easily restored (not just the folder of data) or Migrated during a reinstall if the hard drive died. The user would be working off the local drive.Ī concern is if Time Machine is already configured on the Mac - you can't have two destinations.
In case it is unclear, he is suggesting that Time Machine back up the folder from the local Mac to the server, thus maintaining the files on the server as well (the files would be inside a sparse bundle file / image).
